Crowns Q & A

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns help relieve pain and protect damaged teeth. Crowns are typically made of durable materials like porcelain or zirconia. These materials look and feel like real teeth so you can chew, smile, and speak comfortably.

Crowns provide long-term treatment for dental problems like tooth injuries, severe cavities or worn, aging teeth. Dental crowns can last for decades if they're taken care of properly.

What conditions do dental crowns treat?

Dentists use crowns to treat many severe problems, including:

  • Cracked or broken teeth
  • Aging teeth
  • Serious cavities
  • Weakened teeth (due to fillings or other issues)
  • Stained teeth that cannot be treated with whitening

Crowns can be used to correct these issues and can improve the function and appearance of your teeth. Additionally, crowns can prevent future issues that could cause you to lose the tooth.

How is a dental crown placed?

A dental crown requires two office visits to Smiles of San Jose. During your first appointment, Dr. Cory Timbers, DDS, removes cavities or other parts of the tooth that are damaged. He’ll shape the tooth so that the new crown will fit over it snuggly.

Molds are then taken of your tooth, which are used to make a personalized crown. Because it takes time to construct your crown, you'll need to wear a temporary crown to protect the tooth until your next visit.

Smiles of San Jose offers a quick turnaround on crowns so you’ll be back for your second appointment in a few days. During your second visit, your permanent crown will be bonded to your tooth. Then Dr. Timbers will work to ensure that the new crown will match the shade and shape of your other teeth. This will ensure that you feel comfortable when you chew and when you smile.

What are the benefits of dental crowns?

Your high-quality crown should feel great and offer you benefits like:

  • A complete, great-looking smile
  • Relief from pain when you eat and drink
  • Functional teeth that help you chew more easily

Smiles of San Jose is committed to preserving your teeth for years to come, so you know you’ll get the care you need. Call today or book an appointment online to restore your smile.
